How do you kow if your hamster has diabetes?

read up on the warning signs, but generally a vet can only tell that thru expensive tests and office visit. Hamsters can get so many different diseases, it makes me sad to get one and have it only live half it's life. I have one now that is going to the vet at 3 for an eye problem. I am applying for their credit card for care as I am broke.
